Message from the Governor General on the occasion of the inaugural Duty Counsel Day

Message from Her Excellency the Right Honourable Mary May Simon, Governor General of Canada, on the occasion of Duty Counsel Day

In an ever-changing world, it is so important that we know our rights and how to exercise them.

October 27, 2021, marks the inaugural Duty Counsel Day.

On this occasion, I would like to extend my thanks to all duty counsel, who work to provide Canadians with the free legal aid tools to which they are entitled.

Every year, Canadians use the essential services you provide over 1.2 million times, be it for criminal, family or immigration cases, or simply to get sound advice from experienced legal experts.

This national day, initiated by Canada’s legal aid associations, aims to democratize the law, a fundamental component of the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms, and to make it accessible to all in the fight against injustice and inequality.

Thank you for facilitating access to justice, from coast to coast to coast.

Mary May Simon
