Nova Scotia: “Duty counsel are critical to the administration of justice”

Statement by Nova Scotia Chief Justice Michael Wood on Duty Counsel Day

Duty counsel are crucial to the administration of justice in Nova Scotia and across the country. They are really the frontline workers. They’re the ones that provide objective independent advice, assistance and advocacy on behalf of people who are first encountering our justice system.

Many people don’t know their way through the courts, or through the procedures they’re going to face.

It’s often times of stress and crisis and duty counsel are the people that provide them with experienced advice, calming information, get them started on the right track for what may be the most stressful process they will undertake in their lives.

So, thank you very much duty counsel. We acknowledge your important work and are appreciative of everything you do on behalf of Canada and the administration of justice.
