Statement from Nova Scotia Chief Judge Pamela Williams on Duty Counsel Day
In reality, we should be thanking you every day for the essential service that you provide for Canadians.
As you know, provincial court is the first stop for individuals charged with an offence. Your job is not easy but it’s invaluable.
I know this having served as a staff lawyer with legal aid for 20 years prior to my appointment and during that time I provided duty counsel services. It’s a difficult job but a very important one.
People that come before our courts are often confused or angry, scared even. Some may have mental health issues or substance issues or be dealing with trauma. And they’re feeling alone. They don’t know where to stand and don’t know what to say. And they’re certainly unfamiliar with the process.
So you’re there to be able to guide them and provide them with a service they require to ensure their rights are respected and heard.
Often you’re the only voice for them in the courtroom.
So today as we celebrate duty counsel lawyers across Canada I want you to know that we appreciate what you do to improve access to justice and legal services.
It should be comforting to Canadians everywhere to know that you’re there for them should you ever require you.
Nova Scotia: “It should be comfort to Canadians everywhere to know you’re there for them”
You can spread the word.
If there’s a day for your rights, folks should know about it. Share now.
