Nunavut: “We have people in our territory who depend on duty counsel”

Statement by Nunavut Deputy Attorney General Stephen Mansell on Duty Counsel Day

Hello there. This is Stephen Mansell from Nunavut. I am the deputy minister and deputy attorney general for the Government of Nunavut.

And I just wanted to mark Duty Counsel Day and the importance of duty counsel in Canada. It’s an important constitutional position that ensures the rights of all accused.

And particularly I want to state how important it is in Nunavut.

We have people in our territory who depend on our duty counsel who practice across Nunavut in some very remote places and provide exemplary service.

And I just wanted to say what a great day this is and to say how important the role is, and thank you all for your hard work.
